Story

I was overseas and had just finished talking to my wife.  I was having a good trip but also missing her when I realized how blessed I was in so many different ways and how that was truly a gift from The Lord.  Life can get so busy we forget to reflect and be thankful for the life we have in Him.

Lyrics

I wake up in the morning, and crawl out of bed

I try to get myself ready for the long day ahead

I stop to pray, thank you Lord for this day

Because of You I can say

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

Sometime I go through the motions just like I’m playing a part

Led by emotions, I choose the wrong place to start

It should be so easy. To see that You are the reason

You give me life every day

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

Open my eyes and help me to see

The plan you envisioned for me

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

I know it’s true, this gift is from you

You give me life every day

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

I’m alive, thank God I’m alive

I’m alive, I’m alive

Story

OK; a happy, up-tempo song about letting go of material things in a minor key doesn’t sound like a song anyone would want to hear but give it a little rhythm and who knows what might happen.

Lyrics

I was standing on the corner the other day

I saw a man, he was on his way

He drove a red Maserati with an engine that growled

He looked at me, you know he just scowled

There was no joy in all that he had

And I couldn’t help but feel a little bit sad

That I couldn’t tell him what I have learned

We must invest in the things that won’t burn

The grass will wither and the flower will fade

What you can see will all pass away

Store your treasure in heaven so you can be sure

That God’s love will endure

God’s love, God’s love, God’s love will endure

I crossed the street to the other side

I saw a man, he was filled with pride

He was making more money than he could spend

He even said he had some money to lend

But all that money could not make him whole

It’s not enough to save his soul

He looked at me and said what about you

And I said I know that this is true

The grass will wither and the flower will fade

What you can see will all pass away

Store your treasure in heaven so you can be sure

That God’s love will endure

God’s love, God’s love, God’s love will endure

The grass will wither and the flower will fade

What you can see will all pass away

Store your treasure in heaven so you can be sure

That God’s love will endure

God’s love, God’s love, God’s love will endure

Story

This was written at a very tough time; I think the song tells the story.  It was Gene's idea to give it a more rootsy feel and Ellen's vocal is my favorite part of the CD.

Lyrics

I’ve seen trouble, I’ve had some pain

I’ve seen some bad times, they’re coming ‘round again

Had my share of hurting, places I’ve been

I’m calling out to Jesus come rescue me again

Some people claim they’ve got it bad

Can’t understand all the trouble that they’ve had

Well I’ve been cut down so low but I’ve got a friend

And when I call on Jesus He sees me through the end

It is Jesus who called me it is Him I received

He will not let me travel life alone

It is Jesus who called me and I know I can believe

He will lead me safely ‘till he calls me home

Some people say, hey you’ve got to be strong

No matter what happens you just keep on pushing on

Well that may be fine but you know people are weak

You can push all you want, it’s Him I will seek

It is Jesus who called me it is Him I received

He will not let me travel life alone

It is Jesus who called me and I know I can believe

He will lead me safely ‘till he calls me home

The world can hurt me, my friends can all leave

But there’s nothing that can take His love away

So no matter what happens, this I believe

He is faithful to guide me through my days

It is Jesus who called me it is Him I received

He will not let me travel life alone

It is Jesus who called me and I know I can believe

He will lead me safely ‘till he calls me home

Story

I wrote most of this as a new Christian, back in the ‘70s.  The bridge was instrumental and I never got it to work the way I thought it should.  A couple of years ago I decided to write words for it and it finally felt right.  I asked Jay if he could make it sound more modern and he took it back to the ‘60s instead.

Lyrics

Spent a lot of my life chasing a dream

Looking for new things that had never been seen

But now I know nothing is new

It’s all been here since it was made by You

Spent a lot of my life looking around

But I couldn’t tell You of a thing I’d found

‘Cause nothing mattered until I found You

No other answer proved to be so true

I look around and all I see

The world, the heavens, sea and me

Were all made by You, all made by you

Nothing else that I could  find

That will not fade away in time

There is none like You, only You

Spent a lot of my life chasing a dream

Looking for new things that had never been seen

But now I know nothing is new

It’s all been here since it was made by You

Story

All too often I have looked at things strictly from my own perspective and missed what I should have seen.

Lyrics

When I was young I used to look up at the sky

Wish that I could fly like a bird

I’d fly so high that when I looked out I

Could see the mountains high to the sea

Like I could see through the eyes of The Lord

Like I could see through the eyes of The Lord

In a few short years I became a man

I had to learn to stand with my feet on the ground

From there I could see, it seemed so clear to me

There were answers that needed to be found

I just needed to see through the eyes of The Lord

See through the eyes of The Lord

The eyes of man see as much as they can

But they are blinded by the darkness of the world

Until God gives us light we can never have the sight

To see through the eyes of The Lord

Let me see through the eyes of The Lord

Let me see through the eyes of The Lord

God help me see what Is Your plan for me

Let my life be a reflection

Of who You are, Creator of the stars

People near and far away

Help me to see through Your eyes, oh Lord

Help me to see through Your eyes, oh Lord

The eyes of man see as much as they can

But they are blinded by the darkness of the world

Until God gives us light we can never have the sight

To see through the eyes of The Lord

Let me see through the eyes of The Lord

Let me see through the eyes of The Lord

Story

Most of this song came as I was driving to the Oregon coast. It was originally an acoustic down home blues song that got a little dark here.  Jay, Gene & Ellen really made it work.

Lyrics

Look out my window, Rain falling down

Falling down from heaven, soaking into the ground

Falling down from heaven, soaking into the ground

Bringing new life to what’s hidden in the ground

Now when that sun comes, with its morning light

New life will begin and we will marvel at its sight

New life will begin and we will marvel at its sight

The sight of that seed pushing up towards the light

Rain down on me Lord, fill my soul

Give me new life, make me whole

I am alive thanks to Your Son

But I need you to finish what You’ve begun

Look out my window, rain falling down

Reminds me of how You pour Your spirit down

Reminds me of how You pour Your spirit down

Filling the lives of the people You have found

Filling the lives of the people You have found

Fill Me up

Lyrics

Sometimes I let this world get me down

There’s so much hurting and trouble all around

And I say Lord, Lord, Lord how can it be

In a world gone bad You’ve been so good to me

It’s hard to imagine what some people live through

And it hurts when I think of what they did to You

But You gave Yourself freely, You gave it all for me

Help me live my life so that people can see

Help me to live my life so that people see You

Let me reflect You in all that I do

Help me when I stumble to open my heart

Help me to get back up and make a new start

I know that one day this life will end

I don’t know how and I don’t know when

But I know when I see you Lord I’ll ask how can it be

In a world gone bad You were so good to me

Help me to live my life so that people see You

Let me reflect You in all that I do

Help me when I stumble to open my heart

Help me to get back up and make a new start

In a world gone bad You’ve been so good to me

In a world gone bad You’ve been so good to me

Story

Two years after losing my Dad my mother was dying.  When we thought she was stable I flew across the country, knowing the end was at least fairly near.  My whole life was playing in my mind and I started to think about the perspective of time as we know it.  That led me to thinking about how little we know it, which led to this song.

Lyrics

We’ve all heard stories from someone we knew

Describing a moment that they had gone through

When everything had changed in the blink of an eye

Some laugh as they tell it, some break down and cry

Because all that they have or all that is gone

Was decided in less time than one beat of this song

When I was a young boy I heard my Dad say

How I understood time would change some day

He said the older he got the shorter life seemed

And the time that is lost cannot be redeemed

I remember the moment but soon it was gone

It was less than a beat of my life’s young song

Like one piece of sand on the ocean floor

This life is just a fragment of a whole lot more

In the blink of an eye it will all be gone

It’s less than one beat of eternity’s song

I cannot begin to comprehend

The concept of time without an end

Or that heaven awaits me when this life is done

My passage confirmed by the gift of The Son

Let me use my time wisely before it is gone

Like a beat you heard once back when I started this song

Like one piece of sand on the ocean floor

This life is just a fragment of a whole lot more

In the blink of an eye it will all be gone

It’s less than one beat of eternity’s song

Story

Sometimes it I feel like I'm a slow learner.  It is encouraging to hear Paul say he hasn't attained the goal yet; I'll keep pressing forward.

Lyrics

Sometimes I’ve questioned the road that I’m on

It can seem so dark, deserted and long

But I know that God’s Word can show me the way

And His Spirit can guide me every day

I know where I’m headed but I don’t know how long

This journey will take or how many songs

I need to sing before it is through

Because one of my songs could mean something to you

Little by little, step by step, I’m on my way but I’m not there yet

I keep looking up His glory to see

As I travel this road He’s laid out for me

Before I had thought about where I would go

I almost believed what I know now were lies

I had no idea that the stakes were so high

Had I not listened when The Lord called

I’d be on the wrong road with my engine stalled

But He turned me around, gave me a start

Opened my eyes and He healed my heart

Little by little, step by step, I’m on my way but I’m not there yet

I keep looking up His glory to see

As I travel this road He’s laid out for me

The mountains are high, the valleys are deep

The curves keep coming and the grade is so steep

I know there’s a prize for me at the end

I don’t want to go back to where I have been

Now I’m getting closer, the end could be near

But when the end comes I’m getting out of here

Heaven awaits me, never to end

The King of Kings has called me His friend

He’s called me His friend, cut my chains free

Opened my eyes so that I could see

I’ll find the way by following Him

His light increasing as the world’s grows dim

Little by little, step by step, I’m on my way but I’m not there yet

I keep looking up His glory to see

As I travel this road He’s laid out for me

Story

What a difference between the first Easter and today.  Obviously, some people weren’t all that happy and there weren’t any chocolate eggs.

Lyrics

They hung my Lord on a cross

When they were sure He was dead, they took Him off

They wrapped Him up, laid Him in a cave

Used a big stone to seal the grave

They sent soldiers to guard the site

So no one could steal Him away in the night

Now none of the soldiers dared to say

What they saw on the third day

The stone was moved and The Lord wasn’t there

He’d gone away but they didn’t know where

They were afraid and they began to shout

We’re all dead if the word gets out

But the word is out, Jesus rose from the grave

There is no doubt He has the power to save

The word is out, how can you doubt that it’s true

The word is out and it’s calling you

You can try to deny it, say it’s not true

But don’t run away from what He’s offering you

He laid down His life, died on the cross

For you and me he paid an awful cost

Now there are those who will say it’s not true

But in the end it’s up to you

The word is out and it’s calling you

It’s calling you

It’s calling you

It’s calling you

It’s calling you
